Kathryne F. Carr

Ms. Carr is co-founder and Managing Director of Tall Oaks Capital Partners, LLC, a seed and early-stage venture capital firm located in Charlottesville, VA. Prior to her association with Tall Oaks Capital, she co-founded Whetstone Partners, LLC, in 1996 to help fund and grow new businesses in the health care sector. Whetstone Partners' clients included a number of seed and early-stage companies that originated in several academic research institutions. Ms. Carr has held several executive and managerial positions, including: Vice President of Operations for Insmed Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: INSM); Project Manager for Innotage Management, an investment management firm for health care start-up companies; and Director of Investor and Public Relations for Genetic Systems Corporation, before its acquisition by Bristol Myers. Her Tall Oaks portfolio responsibilities include Aldagen, Biolex, and MaxCyte. She is a member of the Board of Directors for the Southeast Biotechnology Organization, the University of Virginia (UVa) Patent Foundation, the UVa-Coulter Translational Research Program, and serves as a member of the Board of Advisors to EpiEP, Inc. Ms. Carr is a graduate of Allegheny College with BA in Political Science, and she completed graduate studies in Finance at American University.

Michael L. King, Ph.D.

Michael L. King, Ph.D.

Dr. King has a broad record of achievement in vaccine and pharmaceutical process technology development and manufacturing operations. He is currently lecturing on "The Business of New Product Development" as part of the engineering business minor at the University of Virginia (UVa) and previously served as the Brenton S. Halsey Distinguished Visiting Professor at UVa. Prior to accepting his appointments at UVa, Dr. King was Senior Vice President and Advisor to the Chairman, President, and CEO of Merck & Co. after serving as Senior Vice President of Science and Technology for the Merck Manufacturing Division and as a member on the Board of Directors for the Sanofi-Pasteur MSD Joint Venture. Dr. King is active in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the American Chemical Society. He has served on academic advisory boards at UVa, the University of Delaware, and the University of California-Berkeley. Dr. King also served on the Board of Directors of the National Action Council for Minorities (NACME), culminating with his election as Chairman in 2004-2006. He is currently serving on the Board of Directors for ADial Pharmaceuticals and on the Advisory Board for the Delaware INBRE (biomedical research network). Dr. King received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware, his MS in Chemical Engineering from UVa, and his BS degree in Chemical Engineering from Virginia Tech. He is widely traveled, having visited all seven continents, and he avidly chronicles his trips through photography.

Douglas W. Mendenhall, Ph.D.

Douglas W. Mendenhall, Ph.D.

Dr. Mendenhall has over 35 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry. Most recently, he was Vice President of Worldwide Pharmaceutical R&D at Merck and also served as Basic Research Site Head of its West Point, PA, facility. Before joining Merck, he was the head of Pre-Clinical Development for Glaxo Wellcome in NC and in the UK. Dr. Mendenhall was with Glaxo and Glaxo Wellcome for 11 years where he progressed through a number of positions including co-leader of the Hospital Critical Care therapeutic franchise, one of six such units that managed the commercial as well as technical development of Glaxo Wellcome's global portfolio. Prior to joining Glaxo, Dr. Mendenhall was with Abbott Laboratories for 10 years where he rose to the position of Director of Product Development for the Pharmaceutical Products Division. He has a PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and a Master's degree in Medicinal Chemistry both from the University of Kansas. He is originally from Seattle, WA, where he did his undergraduate training in Pharmacy at the University of Washington. Over his industrial career, Dr. Mendenhall has contributed to the development of over 65 commercially marketed products, including their CMC regulatory approvals and tech transfer. Since retiring from a full-time position in industry, Dr. Mendenhall has started an independent consulting business in Chapel Hill, NC, focusing on leadership and strategy in organizational and process redesign. As part of his consulting practice, Dr. Mendenhall served as the Interim Head of Patheon's Pharmaceutical Development Services division and continues as a strategic and alliance advisor.

David B. Patteson

David B. Patteson

Mr. Patteson is President and CEO of Advion BioSciences, Inc., and a member of the company's Board of Directors. Advion is the largest privately held bioanalytical research company in the world, and a supplier of microfluidic chemistry systems for clinical diagnostics and drug discovery research. Prior to Advion, Mr. Patteson served as President and CEO of Biotage, a major life science company traded on the Stockholm Stock Exchange, and was a member of Biotage's Executive Committee. Under Mr. Patteson's tenure, Advion made four acquisitions and established itself as the largest global supplier of systems and consumables for pharmaceutical chemistry discovery research. Prior to Biotage, he served as Corporate Vice President for Siebe, PLC's $250 million Measurement and Controls business where he managed 1,200 employees with global R&D and production operations. Mr. Patteson holds degrees from both the University of Richmond and Virginia Tech, and completed a multi-national course in International Management conducted through the Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne, Switzerland. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the University of Virginia Foundation, where he has served as Chairman of the Finance and Audit Committee and Chairman of the Marketing Committee. He also serves on an advisory board at the University of Richmond and as a member of the Board of Directors for two privately held biotechnology companies.
